What is a trauma-informed approach? As a counsellor, I have had extensive training in working with trauma and consider myself to always work with a trauma-informed approach. But what does this mean and how can this influence the therapeutic work?

I started my career in mental health after a few years as a Samaritans volunteer. I worked with a range of mental health issues, from mild depression to those with a forensic mental health background. My next role was working at a drop-in center for those experiencing domestic abuse. I enjoyed the role enormously and was outraged at the injustice many of my clients faced. I worked as an IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor) and after a career break, went on to work as an ISVA (Independent Sexual Violence Advisor).
