What to Expect in Your First Counselling Session

Starting counselling can be a big step, and it’s natural to feel unsure about what to expect. At CB Therapy, I aim to make this first step as comfortable as possible, ensuring that each client feels welcomed, valued, and understood.

Your First Session: An Introduction to Therapy

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin to establish a sense of trust. I understand that talking about personal topics may feel difficult, so the pace is entirely up to you. This initial meeting typically includes a free phone consultation to discuss your goals for therapy and any questions you may have about the process.

During our first session, we will:

  • Discuss your goals: What brings you to therapy? What do you hope to achieve? Whether you’re dealing with specific issues or just looking for a space to talk, our first session will focus on understanding your needs.
  • Introduce my approach: I’ll share a bit about how I work as an integrative counsellor, combining person-centred and psychodynamic methods. This allows me to offer a flexible approach that we can adapt as we go.
  • Answer any questions: This is your time to ask anything about the counselling process. If there are particular concerns or preferences, we can discuss them openly.

What to Bring to Your First Session

There’s no need to prepare much, but it can be helpful to think about what you want to focus on. You might want to write down any thoughts or concerns in advance, especially if you’re worried you might forget something you’d like to discuss.

Tips for Making the Most of Therapy

Starting therapy can feel daunting, but taking it one session at a time helps you ease into the process. The first session is a beginning, a chance to see if the approach feels right for you. Trust your instincts and be open to the experience.

If you’re considering starting therapy and would like more information, please get in touch. I am here to help guide you on this journey of discovery and change, offering a safe, confidential space to share and heal.
